To Honduras Relief Effort INC. Sponsors,
After two years of our not being able to travel to Honduras due to
COVID, Nina and I have once more traveled there the first full week of this month. The past two years, we have continued to have garage sales, receive donations and purchase multiple items the people in Honduras in need. Our distributions included being able to serve 56 children and their families that you sponsor including hygiene items, clothes, food, shoes (over 150 pairs), vitamins, over-the-counter medicines and money. As well, approximately 70 more families including 15-20 needful elderly received basic useful items.
A local minister where one of our long-time families attends granted us their building to use as a free store with the church people graciously assisting our distributions. As well, one of our long-time volunteers, Mayita, opened her home to allow us to stay the week with her and her family and to distribute out of her home. In return, we were able to put screens on her doors, install a ceiling fan and put in a new stool in the bathroom.
Because some people were not able to come to us, we made approximately 15 home visits. One mother who was virtually homeless with three children, ages 5, 7 and 13, are now in a safe house with our being able to purchase basic household needs including a table, chairs, beds and food. In spite of the plight this family has survived, the children were very well mannered.
Two of the children we work with have been able to have successful needed surgery and one family had their roof and inside rooms repaired that had been damaged by the rains.
Other items we were able to give to families included 3 computers, 6 phones (an essential safely issue need), 3 beds, 3 televisions, and lots of canned goods to the poorest included canned milk to twins who need the extra nutrition.
Elizabeth, David and Patricia in Dawn, MO., continue to hold 2 garage sales annually and because of this, they provide an additional $300 monthly to help other families, both with children and the elderly.
It is Christmas time, and in reflecting with our numerous experiences in this recent week in Honduras, I have selected one of our experiences to share that exemplifies the Spirit of this Precious Holy Season. Honduras’ most popular sport is football, the sport we call soccer here in the states. A group of approximately 10 youth all played soccer. Because we only brought one ball this trip, Nina explained her dilemma to this group of youngsters. The group immediately responded that one of the boys should receive the soccer ball “Because he will share with the rest of us.”
Once more we deeply appreciate your sponsorship these last two years. We are most hopeful you will continue to sponsor a child(ren). And as always, we have found more children who are in great need to be sponsored to be able to remain in school and to have a little extra for school supplies and food. We were aware the poverty has increased in Honduras; yet to see the desperation in person once more lays heavy on our hearts.
Meanwhile, we trust this finds you and yours in good spirits and in good health. May the Holiness of this Celebration of the birth of a baby who taught us: “When you have done this to the least of these my brothers and my sisters, you have done this for me.” (Matthew25:35-40) travel on with you daily.
Sincerely,
Louis Adams, President of Honduras Relief Effort, INC.
